Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa says anyone operating a business illegally in a residential area will be taken to task.

He said all complaints of illegal businesses from residents were immediately attended to by municipal councils.

“I think the message must be clear to everyone that if you operate a business in residential area and you do not have the authority or approval from the Suva City Council, that is a breach in itself,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“So what SCC is doing now, all complaints received from residents they are attended to by municipal councils in Fiji. We make sure we visit those businesses, we serve notices to advise them that what they are doing is illegal within that residential area.”

Mr Nalumisa said approvals given to businesses had to be thoroughly assessed.

“We don’t just give out approvals to businesses within residential areas.

“For any illegal business we give them notices, and we must make sure the business closes down so that the residential neighbourhood is not disturbed.

“There is a process that we have to go through if one is found breaching. “We will take them to court for that breach of law.”
