The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has begun packing pre-poll ballot boxes as pre-polling begins in the country from December 5.
Yesterday, the FEO held a media walkthrough of the area where the operations were taking place.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem explained the ballot boxes were manually tracked from the warehouse to the central processing centre.
“The movement is also tracked through our tracking system, which is where we will be scanning each box,” he said.
“As they are packing, the staff will call out the tracking number for all the documents that is going to be placed in this box. All the things that are placed in this box are tracked to this box so that it’s easy for us to locate it.”
According to Mr Saneem, there would be a limited number of secret envelopes sent with the boxes.
“Only secret envelopes are allowed in the ballot box. If a ballot paper in pre-poll is not placed in the secret envelope, it will be regarded as invalid and it will not be counted.”
In pre-polling venues, only registered voters will be able to vote.
“The voter list is tracked to the polling venue. It has your photos on it. It has your surname, first name, your address your voter number.”
About 77,907 voters are expected to cast their ballots during pre-polling.
